The European Parliament Presidency of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean set the priorities for their work during the Bureau meeting held on 27 January 2021: “Fighting climate change in the Mediterranean”. The Mediterranean is the second hotspot in the world, after the Arctic, and it is warming 20 % faster than the rest of the planet. With current climate-mitigating policies, temperatures are likely to increase 2.2°C by 2040, well above the 1.5°C limit agreed in the Paris Agreement. Tackling climate change means addressing the root causes of instability in the region. Cooperation in the field of environmental and climate action could represent an opportunity for both shores to foster integration and social and economic development in the region.
